Cotula or Leptinella squalida

A closer view of Cotula or Leptinella squalida. It is hardy down to -6 degrees C or even lower if you're lucky. It prefers well-drained soil and spreads to fill in gaps quite quickly without being too invasive. It won't stand a game of football or daily treading, but provides a lovely low maintenance patch of greenery for most of the year, becoming bronzed in winter.

I am going to plant this in the shaded area of my lawn, but what do I put in the sunny patches, please, of my north/south piece of grass.
many thanks,
Janice

Hi Janice

This little plant has grown well in our garden in different areas - one is partly shaded and one is in full sun.

It only seems to suffer in the sun if we don't have much rain - it prefers damp ground.

After a few years, it's knitted together to make good coverage, so your query reminds me to photograph it again as it now looks much better than in the shots on this site.

Take a look at our other page about this plant - you can find it from How to...>Grow specific plants for your kitchen/garden>Non-grass lawn>Cotula

Let us know how you get on.

Good luck.
