Fetzer Vineyard, RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2007 show garden
A fabulous sweep of colour in this wildlife-friendly and sustainable garden designed by Kate Frey. In the foreground, dry soil supports wild flowers such as foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea) and thistles (Carduus sp), which give way to wetland plants such as water mint (Mentha aquatica) and flag iris (Iris pseudacorus) that surround a hidden pond containing reedmace or bulrush (Typha sp) and other waterplants. Beyond the picnic table (recycled redwood) there's a dry infertile vineyard with vines underplanted with grasses and wild flowers including orange Californian poppy (Eschscholzia californica), white and yellow poached egg plant (Limnanthes douglasii), stunningly deep blue Californian bluebell (Phacelia campanularia) and goldfields (Lasthenia glabrata).
