1. Puddled clay - a traditional pool lining
Using puddled clay to make a waterproof lining for a pond is rarely mentioned these days - it's all butyl, fibreglass and concrete.
But before these modern developments, clay was the only suitable material available, and if you're doubtful you've only to look around at our canal system - originally lined with puddled clay.
What exactly is puddled clay? It's clay that has had all the air pockets squeezed out of it to make a solid, immovable, watertight layer. You have to do the puddling so it is a labour intensive method, but clay is cheap and provided you are careful, you should have a trouble-free pond for years. So a small pond in the back garden shouldn't be a problem, should it?

hello.i would like to have a wildlife pond in the back of my garden,presently i have dug out a hole 15 by 4.originally for koi,but herons prevail here,the soil is very heavy but light in colour,how can i tell what type how do i get 'puddling clay' i of clay i have.i know its something to do with lack of air.hope you can help.
