3. Where to train in gardening/horticulture?

Study basic and higher levels at evening classes, further education colleges or universities specialising in horticulture, either full time, part time or on day release from a related job. The courses range from the purely practical to the theoretical, with some offering a mixture.

Or choose a correspondence course, but be sure that the qualification offered is recognised (see previous section '2. Which qualifications?').

Gardening placements and traineeships are also available. For women, try the Women's Farm and Garden Association. For everyone, ask the National Trust, the Royal Horticultural Society, and Kew Botanic Gardens, plus local gardens, botanic gardens, garden centres and other horticultural businesses. And there may be opportunities abroad revealed by an Internet search.

For links to the main UK horticultural and agricultural colleges, look at the Science & Plants for Schools' website (currently City College, Manchester is not included, but will be when the site is updated).

Another list of UK college and university links, including face-to-face and correspondence courses, can be found on the Garden Forum website.

We haven't discovered a site listing all the universities (tell us if you know one), but searching with Google or another engine will reveal the courses. Your local library may also have a list of horticultural courses run by universities.

Hi Christine

Did you try the link above to the Women's Farm and Garden Association (01285 658339) above. They organise part-time training.

Did you try the Training Officer at the RHS at Wisley (01483 224234)?

Also, Merrist Wood College (01483 88 40 40) offers part-time courses - it's near Guildford. I've just looked at their website and they do landscaping and horticulture courses. If the courses don't suit, or the college isn't close enough to you, they could probably tell you about other courses/colleges. The college could also probably advise you about learning/earning possibilities as they would have local knowledge. Ask to speak to someone in the horticulture dept.

Good luck, and let us know what you've found out.

Dear Sirs,

I have just completed at training course with Sandwell Council Voluntary Services in Smethwick, West Midlands in which I went out to do elderly peoples gardens in that area.

I am enquiring if you could advise where I could take a course/placement for horitculture so that I can hopefully obtain employment in the West Midlands area, Birmingham area.

Your response would greatly be appreciated as soon as possible.

Thanking you in anticiption.

Hi Andrew

I can only suggest you follow up the links we've given on this page and the other related pages. These will help you decide what type of work you want to do, what qualifications you'll need to do that work, and where the courses and placements are.

Good luck!
Val
