13. Mower types - ride-ons and tractors - grass collection
Grass collection is usually an optional extra, although you may find it included as a special offer.
On imported machines, a vacuum collection system is commonly offered, using a tube connected to the deck to take mowings to a rear-mounted bag, box or a trailer.
But British manufacturers already know what British gardeners know to their cost - that we cut damp lush grass, which inevitably blocks a vacuum system. So they offer trailed collectors which are more effective. These have revolving brushes which sweep up the cut grass (and leaves) into a container. Sweepers powered by the engine are also available from several companies, including Countax and Westwood. A further advantage of sweeping is that the brushes produce a striped finish.

Anyone out there got a cheap ride-on for sale?
Nick, your problem is that ride-ons with grass collection come at a high price, and hold their value. So a second-hand machine within your budget will probably require a lot of expensive repairs.
So you could either buy another pedestrian mower with a much wider cutting width to reduce your long walk, or reduce the amount of grass you mow weekly by leaving some to grow longer (hire a suitable machine to cut the long grass a couple of times a year) or developing the area into something else eg woodland, or forgo the grass collection so you can get a ride-on within budget. If you mow frequently in the growing season, or get a mulching mower, the clumps of mowings should not be so obvious.
I have spent 18 months trying to find a small ride on mower. I have 3/4 acre of grass.----- I need grass collection box. I am quite happy to buy a used mower . I will not spend more than £1000.
At the moment , it takes me 4 hours with a Mountfield,
and I walk 3.5 miles.----I am 61 years old and need some help. Thankyou yours Nick.
